About Martin

Martin Balmaceda is an award-winning theater director and educator. He holds an MFA in Theater from Sarah Lawrence College and is known for his innovative approach to theater and his abilities with directing both contemporary and classical plays. His compelling vision is characterized by productions that employ a multidisciplinary approach, blending dance and everyday movement with powerful acting performances that range from poetic expression to realistic texts.

 

 

He has directed and performed in productions of classic works by some of the most renowned playwrights including Arthur Miller, Jean Anouilh, Carlo Goldoni, Kafka, and Garcia Lorca. His interest and exploration of contemporary playwrights includes the works of Jose Rivera, Erik Ehn, Juan Radrigan, Lina Meruane, Ramon Griffero, Victor Hugo Rascon Banda, Alex Vasquez, and Pablo Garcia Gamez, among others. Martin’s work has been presented in the most distinctive theatre venues in New York, including BAM, La MaMa, The Bushwick Starr, The New Ohio Theater, Dixon Place, and The Cherry Arts. 

 

 

As an alum of the Lincoln Center Directors' Lab and co-founder of NYC-based La Micro Theatre Company, an ensemble dedicated to presenting Latin American works, Martin has lectured, performed, conducted workshops, and directed plays at prestigious colleges and universities in the US, Canada, Mexico and South America, including Northwestern University, The New School University, Sarah Lawrence College, Friends University, Universidad de las Americas, Puebla MX, Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico, and Universidad del Desarrollo and Universidad ARCIS, both in Santiago, Chile. 

 

 

In addition to his theater work, Martin holds a BA in human behavior and a certificate in creative art therapy. He has broad experience as a consultant utilizing the performing arts and social-emotional learning in NYC schools with community-based organizations, such as The Leadership Program, Creative Connections, and Counseling In Schools. 

 

 

An essential part of Martin’s artistic life is his committment to theatre making and training the next generation of theatre artists.
